I really do love being a property manager, but I’m human, okay? I can only take so much whining during a day. Some days, I have given out all of the grace I have in my cup before lunch. Lord, have mercy! So… I have a little game that I play to get me through the difficult days when my grace cup is nearly empty.
It goes something like this: A resident comes into the office to complain about the tap, tap, tap of their upstairs neighbor’s high-heeled shoes, and how distracting it is for him when he’s trying to take a nap because he is a shift worker, and has to catch his zzzz’s whenever he can. This is a whine with cheese. In other words, he is over-tired and whining, but I can help him out by asking the owner to wear soft shoes inside the unit for the sake of the quiet enjoyment of their neighbor. This is whine with cheese (a task for me).
The whine without cheese may be a chronic whiner who has called me for the seventh time about this neighbor who repeatedly leaves their garage door up all day and he can see everything in the neighbor’s garage, and for whatever reason, it bothers him. “Mr. Whiney-Winer, as I have discussed with you on numerous occasions, there is no rule about leaving garage doors open in this community. I cannot enforce a rule that is not an actual written rule.” I tell him (again). This would be an example of a whine without cheese (no task for me). I will just let this one go in one ear, and out the other.
This is a private little game I play (in my head) which helps me add a bit of levity into my day, and makes me smile for reasons that only I know…
Endeavor to persevere.
