What will be your legacy in the industry? Are you lifted by awards, certificates or a symbolic tchotchke? Will you consider a different legacy, by helping another manager who is new to the industry, or by mentoring someone in your company who is feeling overwhelmed and anxious? It is important to share with others for the benefit of many. If you come across some information that can be helpful to someone in your sphere of influence, share it. Offer to help others managers new to the industry by helping them navigate around issues you know may trip them up. If you are moving on from a property you know well, share with the new manager any unwritten nuances of the community that can’t be found in the documents. Will you be willing to point out the problem people, components, or vendors? For your benefit, seek out more experienced managers, and ask them to share some advice on how to resolve a problem you are working through.
It is only by admitting our vulnerabilities, challenges, fears and failures, can we begin to be authentic and create real, beneficial dialogues for the managers who will inherit the industry as we transition onto new chapters. Inspire and be inspired. Learn. Share. Teach.
Endeavor to persevere.
